Ahanu and I have been discussing volunteering. I have been trying to find opportunities that match his interests and abilities. He said he was interested in building things. I looked into Habitat for Humanity but he needs to be 16 before he can be on a building site. He loves science (mineral science, biology, etc.), nature, Legos and constructing things, animals, being with other people, food, books, music, and more…
At some point, I am going to see about him volunteering at the library, a homeless shelter serving food, a food bank, thrift stores, Habitat for Humanity or an eco-building or landscaping project, Baha’i projects, and a senior center or elder care facility, the Humane Society, a Lego camp, a nature park camp, a rock and gem seller’s booth, Friends of the Library Book sale, etc.
I hope he has some wonderful learning and growth experiences. And maybe even has a taste of something he would like to do as a profession.
I don’t believe Ahanu will be in a traditional school all the way through 12th grade, so these opportunities will be another part of his schooling and also be added to his applications for colleges.
